"Now for my next music trick, I'll need 3 muses from the audience to help me compose a new piece of music, which will only be heard by the people currently sitting in this room right now!"
Dr. K invited 3 volunteers from the audience onto the stage as he set up to do his favourite bit in the show; the premise is simple, 3 members from the audience come up to select 3 random notes on the piano, from which a new piece of music will be created in real time in front of a live audience, which will be played by Dr. K as an accompaniment to a card trick that Albert Tam will perform.
3 ladies were kind enough to volunteer themselves to participate in this magical musical experiment, among them was Carol-Marie, who knew Dr. K since before he was called Dr. K! She has always been a big supporter of his magical endeavours and has stepped up to be the first contributor of this new melody.
She chose a key near the middle of the keyboard. It was an F.
"Fa, a long long way to run..." Dr. K sang to the note as she played it on the piano. "Good choice!"
He drew five straight lines on a piece of paper and added a treble clef, then noted the F as a quarter note without marking a time signature.
Then the two other ladies took turns choosing notes on the piano, an A flat and a B natural, setting the mood for a diminished enigma. Dr. K then proceeded to improvise a piece on the piano from this 3-note melody, while his partner in magic, Mr. Albert Tam performed a card trick involving 3 selected cards in a shuffled deck.
Finally, the 3 selected cards are found after a series of shuffles and cuts, only to be revealed that their values corresponded with the 3 notes of the newly composed melody chosen by the muses... coincidence?
